Lesson 9 - Mood Boards - 16/01/2017

"Learn the rules like a pro so you can break them like an artist."
- Pablo Picasso

Mood Boards! -

A mood board is a means of communication with a director. A good mood board visualizes a designer's mental image in a way that words are unable to do so. It allows the director to see the path the designer is going down and ensures that they are both on the same page and that everyone shares the same "mental image."
They are a clear, concise image of the aesthetic, theme and time period of the design.
A designer may go through two or three different mood boards before landing on one that the director likes.

'Imaginations are different and mood board is a good way of making sure your mental image is the same as your designers'
'its a good way to plant the seed of design, images can plant a seed that start a conversation as words get lost. Images are the best way to explain your ideas.'

My mood board - Missing! Needs redoing. All images gone.

Good - Character design - 'DtCotW'
For my character mood board I went for a streamlined approach as I already had a rough idea of the colours and textures I wanted to include from previous work on 'Danny...'. It's also pretty organised and gives the director a pretty clear image of the path I want to go down. The director is able to immediately see the colour pallet and stylistic choices
Bad - Character design - 'DtCotW'
I feel liked my mood board is flawed in its lack of texture and tactile references. This means that it is less able to draw a director in. It contains less detail than it would have done had I included examples of the materials I wanted to use. If I were to redo the mood board

Good - Set design - 'DtCotW'
Despite it's heavy flaws, I think that this mood board works as a somewhat effective communication because I feel that I am able to get across the key elements that I am going for, namely the sense of age, autumnal colouring and overgrown aspects of the set.
Note: If I were to redo the board I would attempt to create more pop up elements in order to increase the working space.
Bad - Set Design - 'DtCotW'
I am much more critical of my mood board for the set as I feel it is much more disorganised, which makes it more confused and overly busy. At a glace, I find this mood board to be quite garish and unclear. However, I think that if I were to have put it on a bigger board and adjusted the layout slightly I would have overcome these problems and would be much happier with the final result. On the other hand, my inital reasoning for putting it on such a small book was that I wanted the presentation to reflect a family scrapbook in order to emphasize the importance of family in the story. Additionally, think I could have done much more research for the piece and included more tactile elements in order to make it more interesting and eye catching. I did attempt to overcome this slightly but altering the images themselves in order to create textures and aged effects.
